crazy week

Today starts my crazy week. Here's how it's going to be.

Friday, Saturday, Sunday: Work (12-hours the first two, then only 4 Sunday night).

Monday (early...like after I get off work at midnight): drive home to drop my dog off with my parents. Sleep. Coffee with the ladies and drop my car off to have the brakes checked. Sleep some more. Drive back here and pack. Sleep.

Tuesday: Fly to Boston for the conference. Attempt to find a yarn store or two with a co-worker/knitter.

Wednesday: Conference.

Thursday: Conference, then fly back here. Get in about midnight. Parents should have gotten to my house slightly ahead of me with the pup-pups in tow. Sleep.

Friday: Try to find an Easter outfit. Sing and play bells for Good Friday service. Sleep.

Saturday: Work 11-7.

Sunday: Easter service. Do laundry. Lunch. Collapse.

Monday: Work?

Tuesday: Work

Wedneday morning: Leave to visit Sarah for a week.

And that takes us through April 18th. I have one word for you......oy.

What I've learned from my dad....

My parents came down to visit this last weekend and I had a "honey-do" list for my dad. I had some general housekeeping stuff that I didn't know how to do and Dad likes to teach me so I can be as independent as possible. That's how I ended up being the only one of my college friends who had all the tools and actually was able to change her own tire.

So we started off Saturday with the toilet in my spare bathroom. I never use this bathroom simply because the toilet would not shut off. Then I'd have to lift the lid of the tank and pull up the little float to get the water to shut off. Now, Dad's not all that fond of reading directions on stuff and he's replaced the inner workings of a toilet before. So we got the water shut off, all the old innards pulled out and started putting stuff back together. Water back on, tank filling up and suddenly Dad's getting squirted because he forgot to have me connect a little rubber hose to the doo-hickey (highly technical term). Water off again. Connect the hose. Water back on (slowly)...everything's going fine, so Dad tells me to turn the water all the way on. All of a sudden, the inflow tube (where the water goes into the tank) shoots straight up in the air and we have a geyser! Water off again. Directions fished out of the trash. Oh...gee....there's a locking mechanism!! Take the whole thing apart again. Follow the directions this time, and now I've got a toilet that works! Here it is....finished....and looking all innocent. Like it wasn't shooting toilet water at me three days ago.

Next up was a Christmas/birthday present. Mom got this shelf handmade for me by some guys in my hometown called Chips Off the Old Block. It's oak and very heavy. Of course, we had to go to Home Depot and buy Dad a new toy (a studfinder) so we could hang this thing. But now it's up!!

Dad also cleaned out the trap of the sink in my bathroom (now the water actually runs down the drain instead of sitting there being a mosquito breeding ground), and put together a shelving unit for my basement.

And now onto pictures!! Minnie wanted to see...

....a picture of me in band. This is a very bad picture of my concert band senior year. I'm the one smack in the middle of the front row....one of the perks of being first-chair oboe.
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

....my true sock yarn stash. No, I did not cheat!! I've got everything there for sock yarn that I currently possess. Including my current sock-in-progress.
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

....all the socks that I've knitted and kept for myself. Yes, there are dirty ones in with the clean, but this was the only way to get them all in there. And, of course, Phoebe had to investigate.
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Deawn...I'm working on yours, but I have no clue what your first pic you wanted is. I never took french in school!! So either break out the English, Spanish, or Norwegian if you want me to know what you're telling me to take a picture of.

Photo meme - the first 6!

So Judith and Erin both posted their requests for pics of stuff and here they are!!

Judith wanted to see.....

....pictures of me as a child (I had to ask my mom for scans) so here are two from when I was about 2-years-old.
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

....a pic of Phoebe being doing something she's not supposed to. This one was hard. I'm resorting to an old pic of her chewing a bottle because it's almost impossible to catch her doing something naughty when the camera is in reach.
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

.....and *cues the fanfare* a pic of the neighbor cop. You have no idea how lucky you are to get this one, but he was outside washing his motorcycle today, so I grabbed my camera and took an extreme zoom picture from my computer room window. This was the best of the bunch.
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Erin wanted to see.....

....my knitting spot (I'm throwing in the view from my knitting spot as well).
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

....my current favorite WIP (there's only two things on the needles, so this was a pretty easy choice). The Rock 'n Weave socks in STR medium weight Rocktober. I'm working my way out the gusset of the second sock. Hopefully will have them done this weekend.
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

....and what I'm going to be spinning next. I'm currently working my way through 8 oz. of Superwash merino in Goblin Elbows Blue from The Dyeing Arts. Next up is going to be one of my Crown Mountain Farms Sock Hop rovings....either My Boyfriend's Back or I've Got You Babe.

And that's it for now!! Anyone else have 3 things they want to see me take pictures of? I probably won't post them this weekend because my parents are here, but I'll get to them early next week.

Now I need to finish my coffee so I can go outside and scoop dog poo before my parents get here. My dad's dog likes to eat poo, so right now she'd think my backyard was a buffet.

Another meme

This one's a photo one!

All I need is for you people to list 3 things you'd like to see me take a picture of (g-rated please!), then I'll post the pics right here!

See? Easy!

owie

I let my church's DCE talk me into playing dodgeball this afternoon. It was a combined meeting for Young Adults (that I'm part of) and the youth. Can I just say....

OWIE!!!

I haven't had that much physical activity in a while and I'm starting to feel it. Even driving away from the school (where we played), I had trouble steering my car. I normally drive with my right hand on the wheel, but my shoulder was basically numb and I couldn't turn with just my right hand. My butt and legs are feeling it too and I can tell I'm going to regret not stretching beforehand. But who stretches for dodgeball?

Now I'm off to knit a quick Baby Kimono from Mason Dixon Knitting for one of the girl's in my Bible study who just had a baby girl a week ago.

The Uniform Debacle

The company I work for (a health organization with several hospitals in the city) has decided to change its uniform policy. I didn't care at first. Scrubs are scrubs. I'm basically trading my sleeping pajamas for my working pajamas. Comfiness abounds!

As of now, we're allowed to wear pretty much anything we want. I've got a whole closet in my spare room that is full of print scrubs that my mom has sewn for me. Half could be worn year round and the other half is for specific holidays.

July 1 that will all change. As a nurse, I must wear navy blue pants, a navy blue jacket (if I choose) and either a navy blue or sandstone (think khaki) scrub top. Shoes must be either navy or white. And socks are supposed to be white socks or nude stockings (hah!).

I can see depression looming.

So Friday morning I finished working a shift and went downstairs at my hospital to one of the conference rooms where we could try on the different styles of uniforms. As I full-time employee I was given a voucher good for 4 pieces of clothing. Not four uniforms.....four pieces. Given that I work 3 12-hour shifts in a row when I work weekends, only having two uniforms just isn't going to work for me. So I was already expecting to spend money.

And I'll just pause here to state this. I'm tall. Ok...5'10". But I inherited my dad's 6'3" legs. I must must must have at least a 33" inseam on my pants and a 34-36" is preferable to allow for shrinkage in the wash.

So I tell this to the little "personal shopper" lady who is trying to help me find what I want. I told her what I needed with pants (plus that I wanted cargo pockets on the pants....that's where I carry my work phone) and with scrub tops (front hip pockets and I'm also pretty skinny so I didn't want to swim in it).

This lady hands me a pair of cargo flares (not one of the included free styles and not in talls since they don't come in talls) and a medium women's top that actually fit what I wanted. Go into the dressing room. Try to put the pants on. The crotch is all the way up and the cuff of the pant is ending 3-4" above my ankle. Duh! I knew they wouldn't work but this lady wouldn't listen! The top was actually okay, but a little bit on the sloppy side of big. So I stepped out, traded the medium top for a small one and asked if they had any men's pants that fit the bill.

Took my small top and men's pants (and the ladies looked scandalized that a girl wanted to wear men's pants!) back to try them on. The pants were great....aside from the fact that they have an elastic waist and a zippered fly on them. But the top....oh the top! It fit great around, but they must think that the difference between someone who wears a medium and someone who wears a small is about 8" in height.

I kid you not! The top ended at the top of my hips, the pockets rested on my belly, and in order to get into the pockets (which I have to do at work about every 2 seconds) I would have to feel myself up. Lovely. Back out to the ladies I go. Asked them if they had tall people in mind when they designed these stupid outfits. No answer. Asked for a small men's top with front pockets (also not a design included on the free voucher). They had to hunt for one for me to try on because they figured that no men would want to try on a small. Stupid people.

Finally!!! Halleluiah!!! A combo that fit!!! Now for that I was completely decked out in men's clothing I moved over to the warm-up jackets. Normally I wear a v-neck cardigan with snaps. They only have v-necks with buttons and the large was huge and the sleeves ended two inches above my wrists. Switched over to the snap-front round neck and it's sleeves were also too short, but not by as much. Then I noticed that the cuffs had been rolled up by the person before me. Yes!!! And the jackets count on my voucher!!!!

So I'll be ordering four free jackets and four of the men's small scrub tops. What's that? Why no pants? Because they didn't have any talls to try on. The regulars fit, but only just and I'm scared they'll shrink in the wash. I'm going to order from a Canadian scrub company that I've always bought my pants from because navy is navy right? My boss is continuing to wear her Cherokee pants, so I figure I'll be safe. I may order one of the "required" brand just in case one of the house supervisors decided to go all fashion police on us. But I've already stated that to them that if there are people coming up the floor at two in the morning and insisting that we show them we're wearing all Landau brand, then I'm leaving this company.

Oh!! Didn't tell you the best part. All tops and jackets are going to have my company's logo embroidered on them. So they're basically branding us. What's next? Barcode tattoos? GPS locator chips? And may I note that the uppity ups who made this clothing change decision don't have to wear the stuff. They get to merrily keep wearing their suits and dress clothes for the little office jobs.

I'm going to be kicking and dragging my feet all the way to July 1.

movie/geek meme

Ok, I already know that I'm going to be well over a hundred movies with this meme. According to the supposed "rules," if you've seen over 85 of these movies, then you have no life. Look bub....it's not that I have no life, it's that I work nights and tv at 3 AM stinks! That said...here we go.

an executive decision

Ever since I got the Rockin' Sock Club package last Saturday, I've been waffling on whether or not to make the pattern that came with them. While I was waiting for my shipment to arrive (rather impatiently), I'd been seeing a lot of sock clubbers' frustration at not being able to get gauge, or finding the cuff was too tight to go over even the most shallow of insteps. It seemed there were a plethora of problems people were experiencing and I didn't want to start hating my socks.

My mom had gotten her kit a couple days before me and since she's a rookie clubber, she cast on right away. She's been giving me regular updates as she's been making her way through the first sock and last night sounded the death knell. Mom didn't even bother to bind-off the ankle...just pulled the dpns out and tried it on. The verdict? Too tight to get over her instep, so I knew there was no way it would make it over mine.

The executive decision? The Monsoon yarn will become RPMs. It was a fun pattern to knit for the ugly socks and I think it'll cause me less fits getting it to fit my crazy long foot with the high instep.

a big fat nada

I have nothing to show you, nothing to talk about. My body has rebeled and has taken to knocking me unconscious as soon as I sit down in a chair. Tonight I gave in and actually lay down on the couch with a blanket. Then I slept from midnight until 4:30 or so. No knitting done besides the two rows I go in on my sock while I was waiting for bell choir to start. Nothing new started, nothing finished, no new movies watched. Maybe this weekend.

You like me!!!

So I recorded with Miss Violet on Monday so she could put out a podcast this week while Miss Lime is away. We spent two hours prattling on and on (ok....I prattled), then I came home and slept 14 hours straight.

The cast went up yesterday while I was sleeping and I went to work having only listened far enough to be completely embarrassed by my imitation of my dog barking. Lovely.

But then I saw that I had fan mail!!! And people on the messageboards liked me! Yay! That just made my night for me and turned what could potentionally have been a crappy night at work into a better one.

hohum

My sock club kit finally came today!! Stupid mailperson shoved it into my mailbox (we have communal mailboxes about every block or so in my neighborhood and my slot is about 18"x3") so I had a little struggle to get it out. But it's in my hands.

Let me say that I'm kinda underwhelmed. It might be because I'm tired (working the weekend), didn't have my coffee, saw it on about 80 other people's blogs (which was almost impossible to avoid since my box came so late), or it might be the color. The color is beautiful as always, but it's just a little blah for me. I'm excited to start the sock though.

But it's here! Yay!

grrrrrrrrr.....

I'm back from the mailbox (decided not to stalk the mailperson) and there was no sock club box. I've sent off an email to Blue Moon, so hopefully I'll hear from them soon and get my box.

And now I must vent....

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

*ahem*

I'm done now. Must go to work for the weekend.

ETA: I emailed Blue Moon and got a response back almost right away. My shipment evidently went out yesterday, so I should have it either tomorrow or Monday.

Here they are! My latest socks....

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

They're basic stockinette socks using the cheat sheet formula in the Yarn Harlot's Knitting Rules book. 72 stitches on size 1 Knitpicks dpns using Trekking XXL color 76. Here's a closer look.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

The color's really washed out but at least you can see the color shifts. It's actually closer in color to the deep burgundy in the first picture.

And I finished the secret project tonight at SnB after getting the new ball of yarn from Minnie. Yay!! So I'm going full steam ahead on my Rocktober Rock and Weave sock while I keep impatiently waiting for my sock club kit to get here.

Plus I finished the cheesecake to take to work for the potluck.

finished!

The relatives are gone, I got lost coming back from the airport (twice!), and I've got knitting to show off!

Don't have pictures yet (I will tomorrow), but the trekking socks are done. So that's another 437 yards added to my total for the sock marathon. My grand total so far (given away and knitted up) is 2042 yards or 1.16 miles. I had a goal of 2 miles and since the marathon has been extended until July 15th, I might actually make it!

I have to wait to get a ball of yarn from Minnie so I can finish the secret project (I checked and the color I need is called Blueberry, Minnie!). But that's really close to done and if she remembers the yarn for our knit group, then I might finish it tomorrow night while I'm there.

I'm almost done with the cuffs of my Rocktober socks. I think I've got six rows or so before the buttonhole row then the bind-off.

And as long as we're on the subject of STR....I still haven't gotten my sock club box in the mail!! Going off what the ladies said on the club blog, only the first 50 people's boxes to be mailed out got an email notification before they shut that feature off. And I got one of the emails!! So since mine was one of the first 50 out of 2000, why don't I have this box in my hot little hands right now!!!!! *ahem* Excuse the excessive use of exclamation points, but....I WANT MY BOX!!!!!! I don't blame the Blue Moon ladies at all. I know that the USPS is to blame (along with the blizzard), but we've been getting mail since last Saturday, so there's no reason for my sock kit not to be here. The BMFA ladies posted and said that if you don't get your kit by Friday to email them and they'll send another one out. I'll either do that or sit in a lawnchair at the mailbox on Friday and stalk the mailman. Might as well give the neighbors something to talk about.

*snore*

Once again....another to-do list. All this must/might get done before my aunt and uncle show up here tonight.

-Vacuum
-Set up the bed in the guest room
-Go grocery shopping
-Fix the toilet in the guest bathroom
-Finish cleaning the kitchen/dining room
-Double check directions to Eppley

That's just for tonight once I've slept. And now for the next three days (before I work the weekend) here's my list of goals.

-Finish my second Trekking sock (11 rounds until the toe!)
-Do laundry
-Spin more Goblin Elbows
-Wait impatiently for my Rockin' Sock Club box to arrive!!!
-Bake cookies for the neighbor cop as a thank-you for helping me move snow and then driving me to work after the storm last week
-Bake a cheesecake for work this weekend

I guess that's it. Shorter list than last weekend (or was it the weekend before? I can't remember!)

And now I'm very very tired, and rambling and probably not making sense, so I'm going to bed.

finally

The county plows finally came through today sometime while I was sleeping. I've got about 3/4 of the end of my driveway cleared after they were nice enough to plow it shut. And since they evidently plowed it when it was warm enough today so it melted slightly, it's now a frozen chunk of ice....which my snowblower can't get through.

Lovely.

Still snowed in...

So it's 2 AM Saturday morning and the county snow plows still haven't been by to clear my neighborhood. I can't make it out of my driveway, let alone down the street.

Had to have the neighbor cop drive me into work on Thursday night. Then work almost didn't let me go home Friday morning (ended up staying there 'til almost 9 before they let me leave).

So I guess this whole weekend is going to be spent not able to leave the house for anything. At least I'll get a lot of knitting time in!

Speaking of knitting....I'm 24" into the secret project, almost have the second cuff done on my Rocktober socks, and haven't touched the second trekking sock since I turned the heel. I guess I'll try to finish those three things this weekend while I wait and see if the USPS can make it out here to deliver my STR sock club package. I know it's been mailed, so now it's a waiting game.

And here's a mini-rant for you. The USPS....whatever happened to sticking with their motto....you know the one. Come wind, come rain, come sleet, come shine. But I guess that doesn't say anything about blizzards.

Cleaning will happen this weekend too. My parents weren't able to come down because of the storm hitting everything between them and me, but my aunt and uncle are flying to Reno this next Wednesday. So I told them they could stay over Tuesday night since their flight's so early.

Guess I'll get back to my knitting and movie watching.

Forgot to add that I finally sent Erin her Christmas present, so I can now post pictures of it!!
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

They're a pattern called Blueberry Waffle socks (which I've lost the link to), knit in Mountain Colors Bearfoot, colorway Crazy Lady. Modified to be done on size 2s. It's hard to tell in the picture, but they're a mix of navy blue, red, purple, burgundy, and a little bit of deep magenta.

The move music meme (the honest one)

So I'm going to do two posts....one honest one (this one) and one where I pick from my music library what I think fits. Let me know what you think!

The rules:If your life was a movie, what would the soundtrack be?
1. Open your mp3 library
2. Put it on shuffle.
3. Press Play.
4. For every question, type the song that's playing.
5. When you go to a new question, press the Next button.
6. Don't lie and try to pretend you're cool.
7. Don't skip songs.

Ok, here we go:
1. Opening credits: "Basic Instructions" - Burlap to Cashmere

2. Waking up: "I Wanna Be Moved" - Ginny Owens

3. First day of school: "I Wish I Were the Rain" - SheDaisy

4. Fight song: "Love Goes On" - SheDaisy (I think this should have been the next song)

5. Breaking up: "Reach" - S Club 7 (Why oh why do I still have this group in my iTunes library?!)

6. Happiness: "Can't Fight the Moonlight" - LeeAnn Rimes

7. Life's okay: "Holding Out for a Hero" - Bonnie Tyler (this would be my Footloose phase manifesting itself)

8. Mental breakdown: "I Can Love You Like That" - All-4-One (and I'm having another mental breakdown right now)

9. Driving: "That's When I'll Know I'm Home" - Geoff Moore & the Distance

10. Flashback: "Here for the Party" - Gretchen Wilson

11. Getting back together: "Ready to Run" - Dixie Chicks

12. Wedding song: "When God-Fearin' Women Get the Blues" - Martina McBride (LOL)

13. Birth of first child: "Church" - Lost and Found

14. Final battle scene: "If My Heart Had Wings" - Faith Hill

15. Death scene: "The Steward of Gondor" - Return of the King soundtrack featuring Billy Boyd (Strangely appropriate....if only I actually could get Billy Boyd to sing to me...hmm)

16. Funeral song: "Paradise" - Styx (also strangely appropriate)

17. End credits: "Dancin' in the Sheets" - Shalamar (hangs head in shame)
